Unlocking Potential: Businesses Across Mid and North Wales Explore Employing Prison Leavers

Two regional events held in April brought together employers, support organisations, and justice sector representatives to explore the opportunities and benefits of employing prison leavers in Mid and North Wales.

Hosted by the Mid Wales and North Wales Regional Skills Partnerships (RSP) in collaboration with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the events aimed to challenge perceptions and highlight the potential of this underutilised workforce.

With a combined attendance of 88 participants across both events, the initiative successfully fostered dialogue and understanding between employers and potential employees, paving the way for more inclusive hiring practices in Mid and North Wales.

Both sessions offered practical insight into how employers can support individuals with convictions into sustainable work. Attendees heard from a range of organisations including the Prison and Probation Service, Working Wales, Communities for Work+, and DWP Work Coaches. Firsthand stories from prison leavers and employers helped illustrate the impact and value that second chance employment can bring to individuals, businesses, and communities.

The events also marked the launch of the Welsh Government's new Employer Toolkit, designed to provide guidance and resources for businesses interested in recruiting prison leavers: Offender Employability | Business Wales

Employers were encouraged to reflect on inclusive recruitment practices, especially in light of Ministry of Justice data showing that 27% of working-age adults in the UK have a criminal conviction. With many prison leavers holding industry-relevant skills and qualifications, organisations that consider this talent pool may find committed, job-ready candidates who can add real value to their teams.
